Curvy in the City of Angels and the official last post of 2011!

The City of Angels, specifically Studio City,  will forever be in the hearts of these curvy girls.  Our first ever official cabaret show, under the musical direction of Dan Ellis, was a truly amazing experience.  The room was filled with friends and family and even a couple of reviewers.  But, we’ll get to that…

It all started in June with confirmation of our being booked at Sterling’s Upstairs at Vitellos, a Los Angeles gem of a cabaret room and supper club reminiscent of  NYC.   Then it became a whirlwind of rehearsals, song choices, shows and just plain ol’ hard work! But, it was definitely all worth it!  We even had an official merchandise table (run by Karen’s MIL and SIL, thanks girls!) filled with cute stuff to buy and buy they did!

We were fortunate enough to be reviewed by 2 reviewers, Don Grigware  Don Grigware is an Ovation nominated actor and writer whose contributions to theatre through the years have included 6 years as theatre editor of NoHoLA, a contributor to LA Stage magazine and currently on his own website:    www.grigwaretalkstheatre.com    Here’s our review!  http://losangeles.broadwayworld.com/article/BWW-Reviews-Dangerous-Curves-Deliver-Harmoniously-Sterlings-20111206##ixzz1gpMFSnkm

and secondly by   Robert Machray   Robert Machray has appeared in over 150 plays and has worked at 14 Tony Award-winning theatres. He has been nominated for and won numerous awards. Robert has a B.A. from Yale and an M.F.A. from USC. He has taught at USC, UCLA, UCSB, and Pasadena City College. …   Visit Robert Machray’s author page — Robert Machray’s Blog    And here’s this one!  http://blogcritics.org/culture/article/cabaret-review-la-dangerous-curves-at/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+bc%2Freviews+%28Blogcritics+Reviews%29#ixzz1gpMXawby

Here we are with Michael Sterling after our show and after a delicious meal of  salad and pasta (gluten free!) and lovely wine.

We are beside ourselves with glee and gratitude over these reviews!  We simply have to thank our husbands, our families and our friends for all their time, love and support in our effort to elevate and share our music beyond Las Vegas.  This endeavor would not happen without them and we are so blessed to have each and every one of them in our lives.

The world is looking mighty rosy and curvy as we peer into 2012.  Come along with us and let’s live out our dreams together!  Dangerous Curves is about the beauty of music and the strength of self. No matter who you are, where you are, what you are, you can achieve your dreams!  Let us know your plans and dreams and schemes for 2012, we’d love to hear from you.

The girls of Dangerous Curves, Lisa Smith, Margaret Menzies and Karen Michaels wish you a love-filled Holiday season, and a dream-filled 2012!

Happy Thanksgiving and Hello LA from the girls of Dangerous Curves!

Can you believe it’s almost Thanksgiving?! We’ll tell you a big, curvy secret…WE CAN’T EITHER!  We’ve been writing shows, writing new arrangements, recording in the studio for our new Christmas EP and preparing for our cabaret debut at Sterling’s Upstairs at Vitello’s! To tell you the truth, it really is time for some delicious turkey, stuffing and a lovely glass of Chardonnay! Gluten free for Lisa, please! Check out her Gluten Free info here!

Last weekend, we had the pleasure of performing at one of our local and beautiful theatres, Freedom Hall. What a lovely audience on a fab Vegas Sunday afternoon! We performed many Dangerous Curves favorites like our Radio Medley, with songs such as Sentimental Journey, Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy and features of actual radio moments of the past, Natural Woman, I’m A Woman and many more!

We even had a real merchandise table with our new items! A darling T shirt, a handy shopping bag, a useful keychain and of course our CD, Girl Talk!

We were quite overwhelmed with everyone’s interest and generosity with our merch and very grateful!  If you are interested in any of our items check out our Curvy Boutique.

Now, our focus is on December 4th and our cabaret debut at Sterling’s Upstairs at Vitello’s! Our show is called, Dangerous Curves…finding Harmony on the road less traveled… it is a blend of some of our faves and new arrangements too!  From Judy Garland to Stephen Sondheim to contemporary composers like Scott Alan, we are taking you on a musical journey to share the Dangerous Curves message.  What is that message?  YOU are wonderful and powerful, exactly as you are!  Work hard to make the most of yourself and you are sure to achieve love and success! It is our goal for ourselves and we want to share it with you! Plus, as you can see we just have so much fun with each other and our fabulous Musical Director, Dan Ellis, what better way to spend a Sunday evening than with Dangerous Curves?! Make reservations right away!

Married in Las Vegas, Christmas carols in July, an LA debut and a new MD!

Just reading the title makes our Curvy selves shiver with delight!  Yes, its been a while since the Curves have posted in the blogosphere.  It’s not been for want or desire!  There’s lots going on in Curvy Land and it’s about time to catch up and share!

The most obvious piece of exciting news is our move to WordPress.com!  We loved our Blogger blog, but we just felt the need to get a fresh perspective on blogging about our Curvy adventures. Share us with your friends…we’d be ever so grateful!

Last month was filled with some wonderful opportunities for us but the highlight  of the month was the gig we had for Vodafone, UK.  The guests thought they were attending a real Las Vegas wedding.  Boy, were they in for a surprise! From wacky bridesmaids/nuns (that was us!) to barbershop style groomsmen (Fifth Ave), a handsome and wild Minister (Ron Smith), the crazy parents (Rob Hyatt and Terry Gandy) of the bride (Jennifer Vossmer) and of course the groom-turned-Elvis (Brian Mills) they were all in for quite a ride! We spent the whole evening entertaining these fine folks with awesome songs like “Say A Little Prayer” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” to our zany and splashy Nuns number, “I Will Follow Him”. There were silly antics like hoola hoops and a real pink Cadillac that drives right into the Viva Las Vegas Wedding Chapel!  It was truly one of the most fun corporate gigs we have ever had and wonderful to be able to use our acting chops as well as sing.  As you can see, when the Curves get together, there is nothing but fun!

So, where do snowflakes and Christmas carols come in to play, here?  Dangerous Curves is hard at work on their sophomore effort in recording and this time it will be a Christmas EP. We are working on and singing through arrangements from all over the globe! As soon as we make our final song choices, we’ll let you know…meanwhile, it sure does help keep us cool in the hot summer sun of Vegas to sing through these super cool stylings of the season.

OK! ARE YOU READY?!  Dangerous Curves is THRILLED to announce their Los Angeles cabaret debut on December 4th, 2011 at Sterling’s Upstairs at Vitellos!  Cited as “LA’s cabaret destination” by the Los Angeles Times, Sterling’s Upstairs at Vitellos is the #1 Cabaret Supper Club in the greater Los Angeles area!  Stop it!!! How super curvy-licious is that?!  We are beyond excited for this enormous opportunity and we are already hard at work, writing this show.

We knew we had to bring in some big guns so along with that announcement, the Curves are over-the-moon to announce that  Dan Ellis has been officially chosen as our Musical Director.  Here’s a bit about Dan, straight from his Reverbnation page.

“Dan Ellis is not only the bandleader of the Las Vegas Classic Jazz Band, he’s the music director for the newest production to hit the Las Vegas Strip: Nunsense, at the Las Vegas Hilton. He is also the music director for “DRINKIN’ – SINGIN’ – SWINGIN’ – Salute to Frank Sinatra – Sammy Davis Jr. – Dean Martin.” which recently performed to a sold-out crowd of 5,000 at the Colloseum at Caesars Windsor, Ontario. A Cheesehead by birth (from Green Bay, WI) he met his wife, Vicki, while working the high seas as a Musician Supervisor for Carnival Cruise Lines. He now makes Henderson, NV his home and his proudest achievement is being Dad to sons Christopher (7) and Matthew (3).”

Alright Curvy friends, that is quite an exciting  line up of announcements for a Saturday afternoon in July! Feel free to drop us a line anytime and find us in all these fun places! Like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, find us at dangerouscurveslasvegas.com!

>a Sunday rehearsal-what?!

>Artist Marta Wiley “ballerina bows”
Although all three of us are true believers in the Universe and all it has to offer us, still I am amazed when something completely pertinent to one of our discussions shows up unexpectedly.  For example, I am an avid follower of a blog on word press called Miyazaki Cabaret Update: DC & Beyond. One of his recent posts happens to be on self-promotion, which I enjoyed.  However, it lead me to an older post on accepting applause and bows and wow, did it really hit home.  In one of our most recent shows, my husband commented on how we spoke over the applause and didn’t wait to accept it.  I told him it didn’t feel that way at all!  As a performer, every moment on stage can seem like an hour, especially when you are accepting applause.  Yikes!  Its tough to simply stand there with NOTHING to do and can feel very narcissistic.  His point was that, not only did the audience not hear what we were saying, (and believe me, we worked hard on those talk spots!) they were left feeling frustrated because they were not allowed to perform THEIR job…to tell us they enjoyed the performance!  Even after this valid point was heard by all, we really didn’t believe it until we viewed a piece of ourselves on video. OH. THAT.  MMMMM.    Which leads us to the title of this post.  Tomorrow, we are rehearsing for a gig in December at the Orleans.  But first, we are going to view the show together in its entirety. We are not going to judge ourselves on our singing or talking or appearance.  We are going to watch and learn and grow.  Thus, a Sunday rehearsal.

P.S. Lisa has a fantastic blog on word press-here’s the link! Lisa’s blog
